Most of us picture coral reefs along sunny tropical Islands, using their symbiotic algae to turn sunshine into food. Visions of what lines the deeper, darker ocean bottoms likely shift towards rock, sand and mud. Dr. Peter Etnoyer, a NOAA research biologist with the National Center for Coastal Ocean Sciences, has spent his career revealing a much more exciting array of life along our ocean depths. Join us to hear Peter share his experience using a submersible to study deep sea corals from Alaskan Seamounts to the Caribbean Sea. He will show videos and talk about discoveries there, and in our ocean backyard off South Carolina! What allows deep sea corals to thrive where they do? Why do bamboo corals glow in the dark? And what do they all have in common with stained glass and psychedelics? That last question will be revealed by teaching artist Marielena Martinez, as she shares the medieval to gothic history of stained-glass art, and guides you to create your own faux stained-glass, seascape-inspired suncatchers.

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! $15 in-person general admission, $10 for educators, FREE for students. Food available from Gooble Gooble. $3 select pint specials from Palmetto and $1 per pint sold will be donated to help support Community Science + Art!
